WildCats Suffer Overtime Heartbreak at SVU

BUENA VISTA, VA – Jamilla Gambee scored in the fourth minute of overtime to lift Southern Virginia University over the Randolph College women's soccer team 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The Knights started out the game with the advantage over the first 18 minutes, firing several shots on goal and earning the first corner kick of the game.  Two of these attempts were blocked by WildCat defenders to preserve the early tie game.

Shortly after, the 'Cats took over the momentum and registered three great chances.  Delaney Doyle, fresh off scoring her first goal as a WildCat on Sunday, sent a blast towards the net, but it hit the crossbar.  She picked up the rebound and launched another attempt, but the SVU goalie was up to the challenge and made the stop.  Two minutes later, Patricia Garrett took a shot and it hit the post.

Ally Ramos had the next chance, but her shot was blocked by a defender.  Southern Virginia registered the next couple of shots but Stephanie Quirk rose to the occasion, stopping two attempts.  The last 15 minutes of the half would be much calmer, with the half ending 0-0.

The second stanza began in a similar fashion to the first, except with both teams getting good looks at the goal.  Each team blocked a shot, before the Knights sent several attempts wide of the net.  Once again things settled down towards the middle part of the half.

The WildCats earned a late goal kick, but could not get a shot off.  Southern Virginia then came down and Gambee had one last prospect to score at the end of regulation, but was denied by Quirk.

In overtime, Randolph had the first opportunity but could not capitalize.  The Knights responded, earning a corner kick after a SVU header was deflected out of bounds by a WildCat defender.  The ensuing corner kick was sent into the box and after a mishit by a Southern Virginia player, Gambee lofted it just under the crossbar and into the back of the net for the 1-0 victory.

Gambee had four shots for Southern Virginia (2-4 overall) to go along with her goal.  The 'Cats earned more corner kicks in the game than their counterparts.  Doyle also took four shots in the game.

Randolph (1-4-1) finishes its road trip on Friday with its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.  The WildCats once again make the trip up 501 to play Washington and Lee University, with the game beginning at 4 p.m.
