#8 CNU Defeats WildCats with Late Goal

LYNCHBURG, VA- The Randolph College men's soccer team lost in heart-breaking fashion to #8 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday night in nonconference action.

Junior Patrick Burns scored the lone goal of the game in the 88th minute off a corner kick from junior midfielder Harry Nodwell to the far post. The ball was deflected after being headed by Burns, but still managed to find its way to the back of the net.

The first half was evenly played with both teams displaying a stout defensive effort. CNU earned the earliest opportunities, but the WildCats backline handled them with aplomb.  Randolph then had their chances late in the half, but the Captains provided the same answer.  Each team had late opportunities off set pieces, but neither team could turn those into goals.

In the second half the pace of the game picked up, with 'Cats earning more chances.  Travis Brown almost put a header in the back of the net in the 55th-minute, but it went just left of the goal.  Brian Anderson got his foot on the ball inside the box at 73:45, but it barely went right of the net.

Then with the clock winding down, the Captains found the back of the net to give them the 1-0 lead.  Randolph would not get another opportunity in the final minutes.

Nolan Mann got the win for Christopher Newport (1-0 overall).  CJ Stevens made four saves in the loss for the WildCats.

The 'Cats (0-1) continue their three-game homestand on Friday.  Randolph takes on Averett University, with game time set for 7 p.m.
