Meet the WildCat of the Week: Women's Lacrosse's Samantha Fagone

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Women's lacrosse goalkeeper Samantha Fagone leads the nation in saves and saves per game.

Her 14.27 per contest puts her over one full save per game above anyone else in Division III with at least seven games played.

Fagone's 49.6% save percentage is 32nd in the nation, as well, and sixth among keepers with over 100 saves this year.

Here is a question and answer session with Fagone ahead of Wednesday's game at Hollins, which will take place at 4:30 p.m., with live video available here: Video

1. You lead the nation in saves, can you talk about that accomplishment?

I'm truly still shocked that I currently lead the nation in saves. Last year I joked around with my goalie coach, PK, about how this year I'd finally make it to the number one spot and well, here I am! It's truly a blessing that I have come this far. I owe my success to my team and coaching staff who push me every day to do my best.

2. You have a big game with Hollins Wednesday, can you talk about the preparation for that?

We go into every game with the mindset of "why not us?" Teams have their good and bad days, so any game is up for grabs in our book. We have been working hard in practice and giving it 150% so when the time does come to play Hollins we'll be at the top of our game.

3. Saturday is Senior Day, what does that mean to you?

Senior Day is the game I have been looking forward to as well as dreading the most. Since day one it has been fellow senior, Taylor Klevenz, and myself, and to know that this huge piece of my life is coming to an end is an indescribable feeling. Part of me wishes I could start all over, go back and step foot into WildCat Stadium for the first time. The other half of me is so thankful for the life lessons this program has taught me. Senior Day isn't just celebrating the seniors, it's celebrating the closing of one chapter and the start of a new. It is odd to think I am ending my 10-year career as a lacrosse goalie, but I hope I've made a positive impact on my team and coaches. It's them who I play for.

4. Looking back on your four years with Randolph, what are your favorite team memories?

Oh gosh I have so many! I think by far my favorite was when we beat Sweet Briar my first year. It was the program's first-ever ODAC win. I just remember crying and hugging my team, we couldn't believe we actually won. Each year the team dynamic has changed, with new incoming players as well as seniors leaving. Each season has varied from the one before it, but all in all each has made me into the player I am today.

5. What are the three best parts of being a Randolph women's lacrosse player?

I would say the three best parts are 1. Not having a team by your side, but a family 2. Being taught life lessons I can apply to life after college and 3. Knowing that wherever I end up in life, I'll always be a WildCat.
