Men's Lacrosse Locks Up Best-Ever Record as Risse Breaks Career Points Mark

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph turned it on after a slow start to earn a win over Shenandoah Saturday at WildCat Stadium.

The WildCats were victorious, 12-8, earning a program record tying fifth win, locking up the best winning percentage in program history.

In addition, junior Andrew Risse broke the program record for career points, earning his 114th in the third quarter, breaking a deadlock with 2014 graduate Colton Wood.

The day was the team's Tie-Dye Day to Raise Awareness for General Cancer Research, which is still accepting donations at randolphwildcats.com/tiedye.

Randolph fell in an early hole, conceding the first two goals of the game.

The defense locked up Shenandoah after that, however, keeping the Hornets without a goal for the next 20:28 of the contest.

With the defense keeping Shenandoah out of the scoring column for over a third of the game, Randolph's offense heated up to take advantage.

At the end of the first, sophomore Graham Southwick scored at 24.2 seconds and 2.9 seconds to suddenly tie the score in a span of 21.3 seconds.

Randolph scored all three goals in the second period, starting with a stellar go-ahead goal by first-year Kadri Hearns, who used a fantastic spin move to get open and finish.

Junior Brian Crosby doubled that lead off a feed from sophomore Shane Soghomonian next, before junior Andrew Gleitz hit the back of the net off of a feed from sophomore Mitch MacDonald.

After Shenandoah closed to within 5-4, Soghomonian took over, having his hand in five goals in the third.

In a key sequence, sophomore Ryan Campbell rescued the ball from the sideline to Risse, who fed Gleitz, setting up Soghomonian for a frantic tally.

Soghomonian returned the favor 17 seconds later, setting up Gleitz for one of his own.

Soghomonian scored the next three to end the period, the last of which was set up by a feed from Risse from behind the net to break the program record for career points and add to his record-setting assist mark.

Hearns and MacDonald each had goals in the fourth quarter to seal the win, a that was all Randolph would need.

Junior Baden James had three caused turnovers to tie the program record for a single season and maintain his spot at the top of the ODAC in that category.

First-year Matt Lindenbaum, in his first career start in net, made 15 saves in a tremendous effort, including a few point-blank shots, one of which came with him on his back.

Sophomore Alex Leyva led the WildCats in faceoffs, going 9-for-12 on the day.

"I think we came out with our heads on straight," Soghomonian said. "I think that contributed a lot to this win. It's nice to see our effort be rewarded and I think that will definitely carry into practice and the Guilford game."

Randolph ends its season next Saturday, hosting Senior Day against Guilford at 1 p.m., where Clay Orshoski and Ryan Mahon will be honored.
