Women's Lacrosse Doubles Up Southern Virginia to Even Record

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Randolph earned a 16-8 road victory today at Southern Virginia to earn the team's first win of 2015.

The WildCats dominated early and fended off a SVU comeback attempt to secure the victory.

In the win, senior Taylor Klevenz, already Randolph's career scoring leader, added another record to her impressive résumé, as she controlled a record 14 draws on the day in addition to her five goals.

Randolph never trailed after a strong early start, taking a 9-2 edge in the first half behind three goals by Klevenz and two from sophomore Leah Hughes.

Junior Taylor Riccardi and sophomore Erin Campbell added goals, as did junior Ashton Ewers for her first career tally.

The host Knights did give up, however, scoring the last goal of the first half and the first four of the second to suddenly cut the lead to just 9-7 with 20:46 to go.

Of Klevenz's 14 draws won, the ensuing one was the most crucial, and Randolph made it count.

Off the win, Ewers set up Riccardi off of a free position attempt to get the WildCats back up by three.

Sophomores Chelsea Marciniak and Alyssa Umberger scored the next two goals of the game to give Randolph a more comfortable edge.

After an SVU response, Klevenz scored consecutive tallies, Campbell added her second and first-year Casey Coleman scored her first career goal off of a free position to conclude the scoring.

In net, senior Samantha Fagone stopped nine of the 17 SVU shots on goal for the day.

Klevenz's six goals is one shy of her career high set in last year's opening day win over Columbia (S.C.).

Her draw control number exceeded the previous record, 12, posted by Ashley Edwards against West Va. Wesleyan.

That record was one day shy of its two-year anniversary.

The WildCats will have a chance to open at home on Saturday in the second half of a WildCat Stadium double-header.

Draw time against Marywood is 7 p.m., after the 4 p.m., men's game.
