Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Once again, Randolph closed with a strong fourth quarter, but the WildCats fell to Randolph-Macon tonight.
Over the last three games, Randolph has outscored its opponents, 12-2, in the fourth quarter, but despite scoring all three goals in the final 15 minutes today, Randolph-Macon still earned a 15-9 win.
After Randolph-Macon opened with two goals, Randolph got a big boost just 10 seconds later.
Junior Baden James scooped up a ground ball after a faceoff win by classmate Brian Crosby and came down and scored in transition with the defender's pole.
James had just one assist over the first 36 games of his career, but has earned a point in each of his last three, including goals in consecutive games.
The defender also had eight ground balls and caused four turnovers today.
The momentum from his goal did not last, however, as the WildCats conceded the final four goals of the first period.
Junior Corey Nehlig opened the scoring off a feed on man-up from sophomore Graham Southwick as the WildCats held the Yellow Jackets without a goal for the first 6:46 of the second.
Four of the next five went the way of the visitors, with just one from Southwick off a pass from junior Andrew Risse in the middle of that spurt.
Risse, who became the second player in program history to exceed 100 career points earlier this week, added another point as he scored from sophomore Shane Soghomonian with time running out in the first half.
R-MC scored the final goal of the period, however, and the first three of the second half, to open up a big lead.
Randolph scored five of the game's final six goals after that, however, but ran out of time to tie.
Sophomore Mitch MacDonald had his hand in four of those goals with a pair of goals and assists.
Southwick fed him for his first marker ahead of R-MC's final goal.
High pressure led to the final goal of the third, as junior Andrew Gleitz took a shot, which was saved by Yellow Jacket keeper Thomas Smith.
Gleitz followed up his shot, forcing a turnover to Soghomonian, then planted himself in front of the crease.
Soghomonian's shot was screened by Gleitz, deflecting off the attackman and deflecting into the net.
The fourth period belonged to the WildCats, with MacDonald scoring first off a feed from Southwick before assisting Gleitz on man-up and Risse to end the scoring.
Randolph is next in action on Wednesday at Ferrum.
