W&L ends WildCats Unbeaten Streak

LYNCHBURG, VA – Washington and Lee University scored three-straight goals after the Randolph College men's soccer team went down a man, to win 3-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Wednesday night.  The defeat ends the WildCats 11-game unbeaten run, that stretched all the way back to the middle of September.

The first half saw both teams attacking throughout, but both goalies proved up to the test.  CJ Stevens and his counterpart Gillen Beck commanded their boxes extremely well.  While there was only a combined total of 11 shots in the first half, it was the case because on the majority of the attacks, Stevens and Beck came off their lines.  Stevens snuffed out two chances before shots could be taken.  With the stellar play, the score remained 0-0 at the half.

The second started with more opportunities right away for both teams.  Stevens made a save less than 40 seconds in, and the Generals earned a corner kick shortly after.  However, the WildCats remained strong not allowing a goal.  Then in the 67th, the 'Cats took the lead.

Troy Jurney sent his corner kick in, and Cristian Irigoyen had his shot blocked.  But the WildCats regained possession soon after, and Jurney sent a long cross from the right side to the back left of the box for Travis Brown.  Brown got his foot on it and finished for his second goal in as many games.

However, less than four minutes later, Randolph had a player sent off for his second yellow card, putting the WildCats with 10 men for the last 30 minutes.  The Generals tied the game 30 seconds later.

Despite being a man down, the 'Cats kept attacking and earned another great chance on a corner kick, as once again Jurney found Irigoyen.  However, Irigoyen's shot was blocked again.  W&L then took the lead in the 76th minute, as Ted Hurst's free kick from just outside the 18 on the right side found Andy Dean for his first of the night.

The Generals ended the scoring with an open netter, as Stevens pushed forward on a last chance free kick.

Hurst scored the final goal for the Generals (11-3-2 overall, 9-0-1 ODAC).  Stevens made four saves, all in the second half.

Randolph (10-4-3, 6-1-3) heads on the road for its final game of the regular season.  The WildCats will travel to Shenandoah University on Halloween for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
