Jurney's Five Points Keep 'Cats Rolling in 4-3 Win over Ferrum

FERRUM, VA – Troy Jurney scored two goals and assisted on the game-winner, as the Randolph College men's soccer team defeated Ferrum College 4-3 on Sunday night.  The nonconference game pushes the 'Cats winning-streak to five games and their unbeaten streak to 11 games.

The WildCats earned a corner kick less than two minutes into the game, and Blake Heatherly stepped up to take it as he usually does.  His service found the head of Jurney, and the ball found the back of the net giving the 'Cats a quick 1-0 lead.  Two minutes later, the Panthers evened the score as Daniel Batong finished a Jae White cross.

Randolph regained control, as three shots caused problems for FC.  Brian Anderson attempt was blocked, Heatherly's shot was saved, and Cristian Irigoyen rattled the woodwork.  Then in the 19th minute, Jurney completed his brace, finishing a pass from Salvador Ramirez on the left side to go up 2-1.

Five minutes later Randolph added to the lead once more, as Heatherly crossed it from the right side, and Sam Griffith scored his second in as many games.  However, the advantage disappeared quickly at the end of the half as FC scored twice in the last seven minutes, and the teams would enter the intermission tied.

Following the half, the WildCats came out firing.  Heatherly's shot was blocked and it was followed by Ramirez hitting the post with his attempt.  Then Jurney's attempt at a hat trick was saved two minutes later.

The 'Cats kept on the offensive, once again forcing the Panthers to respond.  Joseph Thames headed a shot over the cross bar, and Jurney had his next attempt blocked.  Irigoyen and Heatherly sent the ball towards the goal, but neither could find the back of the net.  However the pressure finally broke through.

In the 71st, Jurney's corner kick went straight to Travis Brown, and he fired the ball into the net, giving Randolph the 4-3 lead.  The 'Cats kept pushing, not allowing the Panthers to find an equalizer, leaving with the 4-3 win.

As was the case on Saturday, the WildCats outshot their opponent and held them without a corner kick.  Randolph had a plus-8 advantage in shots, and earned 12 corners.  Derek Thomas and Joe Martin combined to make five saves for the Panthers (5-12 overall).  Matt Tourbin stopped four in the win.

The 'Cats (10-3-3) return home for a crucial Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) clash with Washington & Lee.  The 7 p.m. Wednesday kickoff will go a long way to determining the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
