Second-Half Spurt Sees WildCats with 3-0 Victory
GREENSBORO, NC – The Randolph College men's soccer team scored three times in the second half to cap a 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Guilford College on Wednesday night.
The game started fast for both teams, as Guilford fired a shot towards goal less than four minutes in, and Randolph came right down with a corner kick shortly after. Brian Anderson's ensuing header went over the net, but the fast pace proved to be indicative of the first half. Over the next 25 minutes, CJ Stevens was forced to make three saves, the only ones needed all night and his counterpart, Eric Hayes, made four in the same timeframe.
While the Quakers slowed down, the WildCats remained on the attack as Anderson and Joseph Thames fired shots on net, but Hayes kept the score at 0-0 heading into the intermission.
Following the first attempt of the half by the Quakers, the rest of the half belonged to the 'Cats. Salvador Ramirez sent his two attempts awry of the woodwork, which was trailed by a Troy Jurney shot that was saved. However, after a GC shot was blocked, Randolph answered and Jurney sent a pass to the left side of the six-yard box, where Nate Juth scored his first of the year at 56:41.
The WildCats continued on the offensive, recording five dangerous shots in the next 11 minutes. Then in the 68th, following the craziness of a corner kick, Adam Watson corralled a Cristian Irigoyen deflection in the box and scored to give Randolph the 2-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, Julian Khalili put his corner kick in the perfect spot, as Travis Brown headed in the service for his fourth goal of the year, to seal the victory for the WildCats.
The 'Cats dominated the offensive categories, recording seven more shots and corner kicks, and six more shots on goal. Stevens and his replacement Austin Collier combined to shut out the Quakers.
Hayes made eight stops in the loss for Guilford (5-9 overall, 2-6 ODAC).
Randolph (8-3-3, 5-0-3) hosts Senior Day this Saturday during Homecoming. Stevens, Khalili, and Grant Collier will be honored in the pregame ceremonies, as the WildCats host Emory & Henry College at 4 p.m.
