WildCats Victorious in Key ODAC Matchup during Cancer Awareness Game

LYNCHBURG, VA – Delaney Doyle scored the only goal of the game as the Randolph College women's soccer team defeated Guilford College 1-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday night.  The win is massive for the 'Cats who take over seventh, three-points clear of the teams sitting in eighth, while Guilford is now in that tie for eighth.

The game also served as the Cancer Awareness Game for the women's soccer team.  For more information on the event or how to donate, click on this link.

The first half saw the two teams feeling each other out for the first eight minutes.  Then in the ninth, things got interesting.  Cassie Vaughn sent in a corner kick for the Quakers, where Juliana Evans-Anfom found an open net, but Taylor Gamble was there to clear it off the line.  GC earned several opportunities, but could not get past Quinn-Lynn Bates and the backline of the WildCats.

Randolph started firing back, as Erin McClelland and Delaney Doyle attempted shots, but neither found its way toward goal.  The 'Cats continued to take control in the latter stages of the half, but still could not find the back of the net.  Sam Hablas had the best chance during that time, but her touch proved to be a little long and Maggie Albert came in and picked up the loose ball.  The teams entered the half tied 0-0.

The Quakers took the momentum coming out of the intermission, earning two corner kicks.  On the first, Vaughn's service found the head of Kelli Uresti, but it went high.  However, after the second, the WildCats stormed right back.

Alissa Gembach made a great pass to Meghan Curtin, who was just outside the 18 on the right side.  Curtin then flicked the ball over two Guilford defenders, as Doyle was sprinting into the open box, and she finished top-left for her fifth of the year.

After the Randolph goal, GC became the aggressor, looking for the equalizer.  The Quakers earned several looks, as headers by both Morgan Wolfe and Morgan Henderson went awry of the frame.  However, the 'Cats were not without chances of their own.  Maggie Croft had several shots go wide, while Gembach sent a late free kick directly at goal, but it hit the crossbar.  Nonetheless, Bates, McClelland, Gamble, and Alex Abernathy worked to contain the Guilford push, and held them at bay for the 1-0 win.

Albert made two saves in the loss for the Quakers (5-7-1 overall, 2-4 ODAC).  Bates also had two saves to record her first shutout of the season.

Randolph (5-7-1, 3-3) returns to the road this weekend as it travels to the northernmost member of the ODAC.  The game at Shenandoah University on Saturday begins at 5 p.m.
