Best September in Volleyball History Concludes With Win over Hollins

Box Score

ROANOKE, Va. -- Last year's volleyball team had its winningest season in 17 years, but this year's bunch has already matched that total with over a month still to play.

With today's 3-0 win over Hollins, Randolph moves to 12-6 and 2-2 in ODAC play, making this year's campaign the first time in program history volleyball has hit a dozen wins in a season before the calendar turned to October.

"I am very pleased with the first half of our season," interim head coach Kara Matthews said. "I believe the tournaments early on were able to prepare us in many ways for conference play. Our leadership on the court is also essential in our success, and I hope we keep it going."

The team's leadership comes, in large part, from the seniors on the roster.

Top marks in kills, assists and digs all went to fourth-year players, as Jordan Templin was tops with a dozen kills, Kerry McMichael had 28 assists and Lexi Harrington had 12 digs.

As a team, the ODAC's leader in hitting percentage once again was strong offensively, hitting .273 in the contest, led by a .571 mark by sophomore Noelle Wojciechowski.

Randolph was never behind any later than 5-4 in any set, taking control to win each set without conceding more than 17 points in any frame.

After falling in one of those 5-4 holes in the first set, a 15-4 run, including seven straight on McMichael's service, put Randolph in control of a frame that ended on a service error.

In set two, the 5-4 deficit was erased with four straight on Templin's service, with nine of 10 points going Randolph's way later in the set.

Sophomore Alex Mariona took a pass from McMichael to earn a set-ending kill.

Set three finally had Randolph ahead early, winning the first four points. A Hollins five-point run, however, once again made the score 5-4 in favor of the hosts.

But once again, Randolph responded and won eight of the next nine to once again pull away.

The WildCats conclude September with the best record in program history through the year's ninth month, 12-6.

The team will look to continue its success at Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday.
