Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph had numerous opportunities, but could not overcome Roanoke in a physical ODAC men's soccer contest.
The Maroons scored the first three goals of the game and held off a late surge to secure the key 3-1 ODAC victory.
Roanoke broke Randolph's shutout streak 12:07 into the contest on a penalty kick after a cross from the end line was handled in the box.
That ended the clean sheet streak of the defense, led by senior CJ Stevens, at 426:50, just 64 minutes shy of the program record for consecutive minutes without conceding a goal.
Roanoke's lead was doubled 2:27 off of an impressive volley from 30 yards out in the middle of the field.
That marked the first goal in 1160:40 that an opponent has scored in the flow of play, dating back to last year. Randolph had allowed three penalty kicks and an own goal in that span of 11 games.
Randolph nearly got one back a few minutes later when sophomore Kyle Unruh hit the crossbar from 35 yards out on a laser of a shot.
In the second half, Randolph struggled to get offense going, which allowed Roanoke to score off of a counter on a chip over the defense which was headed in.
Randolph almost cut the deficit soon thereafter on a close-range shot by first-year Sam Griffith off a feed from sophomore Troy Jurney, but Maroon goalkeeper Cole Sinclair made a huge stop.
The WildCats got a penalty kick of their own to finally get on the scoreboard, as sophomore Blake Heatherly put it home.
Heatherly had a few long chances to add another, but two saves by Sinclair off sizzling shots from distance kept the WildCats off the scoreboard again.
The second of those two goals was cleared off of the goal line by a late-arriving defender.
Randolph held an 18-14 edge in shots in the contest.
With the loss, Randolph falls to 4-1-1 and 1-1 in ODAC play. The team next plays against Rowan in Manassas, Va., on Wednesday. Next, the WildCats return home for a Family Weekend double-header next Saturday.
