Curtin's Game-Winner with 39.9 Seconds Left Pushes Women's Soccer Past Peace

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph and William Peace were scoreless through 89:20 today, but a last-second goal gave Randolph a key win.

For most of the contest, it was a defensive battle headlined on one end by first-year Stephanie Quirk and centerback Erin McClelland.

While Quirk made six saves in net for the WildCats, many of which came off of difficult shots, the sophomore, McClelland, played sideline-to-sideline defense in the back-and forth contest aiding a strong defensive unit.

"I think we did really well sticking with them," Quirk said after the game. "I am just happy we got the win."

That win didn't come easily, however, as their counterparts, however, were equally up to the task.

Peace's Shannon Maddex stopped the first eight shots on goal she faced, with defender Devin Thompson breaking up numerous Randolph threats with a superb defensive effort.

With so many opportunities on each end, it was only a matter a time before a team broke through, and Randolph finally did in the 90th minute.

Off of a hastily taken throw-in by sophomore Leah Hughes, senior Brittany Hammons dropped the ball back to Hughes immediately.

The midfielder curled a ball into the far side of the box where first-year Meghan Curtin chested the ball down to her foot and tapped the ball past the quickly approaching Maddex eight yards from the net.

"Leah crossed it in to me and I just got it down and hit it in," Curtin said of her first career goal.

With the clock reading just 39.9, Peace couldn't muster another opportunity, giving Randolph the win.

The WildCats will get back to ODAC play with a road trip to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday night.
