Volleyball Triumphs in Home Opener in Straight Sets

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A team with just one home date in its first 15 matches made good use of the rare opportunity, triumphing 3-0 over William Peace in the volleyball home opener.

With tournaments on the road over each of the first three weekends of the season, Randolph had to be excited to have a match at the RAD Center. In 2013, the team went 6-3 in the RAD Center and won all four of the non-conference matches on its slate.

After conceding the first three points of tonight's home opener, Randolph won 10 of the next 12, taking control early.

Five straight points midway through the frame on the service of senior Lexi Harrington helped push the lead to 16-9.

Peace's attempts to rally folded on a service error, giving Randolph the set.

In the second set, Randolph jumped out to a 9-2 edge, never trailing in a 25-12 romp. Sophomore Alex Mariona finished the frame off with a kill.

Randolph trailed 13-11 in set three, but the service of senior Katherine Lesnak put the team up for good.

At 24-19, a service foot fault ended the match, giving Randolph the win.

Senior Jordan Templin had a dozen kills in her first match since taking over the program record for career kills. Mariona had 11 with an impressive .529 hitting percentage.

"We played really well. We had good communication and had great sets and we were able to put the ball away," Templin said.

The outside hitter is 65 kills shy of becoming the first WildCat ever with 1,000 in a career.

Senior Kerry McMichael led the way with 21 assists and Harrington was tops with 12 digs.

Harrington is within striking distance of breaking the program record for career digs this weekend at Roanoke, needing 19 to tie the mark.

"I am really happy with the way we came out and defended our home court," interim head coach Kara Matthews said. "We were consistent throughout the match."

Randolph heads back on the road for four matches at Roanoke's Maroon Classic.
