Box Score MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Randolph stayed unbeaten, not only this year, but in its last 13 regular season overtime contests, with a 1-0 victory over Capital today.
Less than 15 hours after completing a grueling draw against Johns Hopkins, Randolph was back on the field today against a well-rested Capital squad.
While Randolph's game, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., didn't end until 11:15 p.m., Capital's opener was canceled due to weather.
In an even contest during regulation, neither team could break through, as junior goalkeeper CJ Stevens handled slick conditions to keep the Crusaders at bay.
In the first overtime period, first-year Thomas Yates took a set piece and put it into a dangerous position, where it found the head of sophomore Kyle Unruh.
Unruh redirected the ball into the back of the net, giving Randolph a well-earned 1-0 overtime victory.
With the golden goal, Randolph moved to 9-0-4 in its last 13 regular season overtime contests, dating back to 2011.
"It was a great opening weekend for our young team," head coach Bryan Waggoner said. "The ability to find a way to win against a team who didn't have to play a game the day before shows grit and determination."
"If we continue to grow in this vein we can truly have a great season," he continued. "We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend and we learned what we have to work on."
Randolph opens its home slate next weekend with back-to-back contests at WildCat Stadium on Saturday and Sunday, facing Penn St.-Abington and Marymount (Va.), respectively.
