Mid-Game Cold Streak Dooms Women's Hoops on Senior Day

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph had an edge early on Senior Day, but just before and after halftime, the team's offense sputtered, allowing Virginia Wesleyan to earn the win.

Randolph grew a lead as large as seven, just 4:17 into the first half this afternoon.

After Virginia Wesleyan chipped away, the Marlins (16-9, 10-6) went on a 13-1 run in less than three minutes just before the half.

Randolph only scored one field goal in the first 6:42 of the second half, as VWC opened the frame on a 16-5 run, getting a lead as large of 15 in the process.

Included in that run was a momentum-changing possession that lasted over a minute, as the Marlins pulled down five straight offensive rebounds culminating in two free throws.

Senior Emilee Dunton (Forest, Va./Brookville) broke that streak with a three point play to energize the crowd.

Randolph chipped away multiple times, but could never get the lead into single digits, as VWC had answers for every spurt.

Dunton finished with a team-high 17, followed by 16 apiece from sophomore Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro) and junior Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, Va./Central).

Kelly Jones led four double-digit VWC scorers with 18.

Head coach Allison Nichols's squad finishes the regular season 11-14 and 5-11 in ODAC play. The 11 wins is a program record.

Pairings for the ODAC tournament will be announced this afternoon. Randolph has unofficially been slotted to travel in its first round game, which will take place Monday.
