Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Randolph held Virginia Wesleyan without a field goal for over 10 minutes, but in a game of runs, Randolph's last surge came just short, falling 70-68.
Randolph (9-10, 3-7 ODAC) opened the scoring on a layup by senior Emilee Dunton (Forest, Va./Brookville), but most of the next 11 minutes belonged to Virginia Wesleyan (13-6, 7-3 ODAC) as the Marlins opened up a 10 point edge, 28-18, with 7:53 left in the first half.
Randolph held the hosts to just one point for the rest of the period, however, pulling ahead 30-29 at the break.
Sophomore Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro) hit four times from three in the frame, earning a dozen of her 16 points in the process.
In holding the Marlins without a field goal for 10:02, the WildCats grew a lead as large as seven in the first few minutes of the second half, but a 21-7 VWC run put the hosts up seven instead.
Randolph quickly tied the game, using a pair of free throws from junior Chelsea Tyler (Richmond, Va./Henrico), a layup by junior Allie Druffel (Centreville. Va./Westfield) and a traditional three-point play from Dunton to put the teams on even terms with 3:54 to go.
Crystal Strother hit from three on VWC's next possession, putting the Marlins ahead.
After junior Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, Va./Central) pulled Randolph within one, Alexis Pratt and Tyler exchanged jumpers.
Strother once again hit from deep, making the lead two possessions with 1:19 left.
First-year Jacqueline Hockman (Manasses, Va./Osbourn) halved that edge with 14 seconds left, but after a Strother free throw, Randolph couldn't find a game tying three as time ran out on its final comeback attempt.
Strother led all scorers with a career-high 23.
Randolph received double figure scoring totals from Bullins (16), Dunton (13), Druffel (13), Hoover (11) and Tyler (10).
This is Randolph's first time under .500 on the season, but the team can level its record at home against Hollins on Tuesday.
