Women's Basketball Tops Peace to Win Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Randolph never trailed today, earning its second win in consecutive days by topping tournament host William Peace, 62-39, to win the 15th Annual Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament.

Randolph was led today by the tournament's Most Valuable Player, senior Allie Druffel, who posted 12 points and 10 rebounds in the contest.

Junior Abigail Bullins joined Druffel on the All-Tournament team with seven points today after 19 in Friday's win.

The tournament is named in honor of the late Jackie Ammons, who starred at Peace before a car crash claimed her life just a few days before her graduation in 1979.

Randolph locked down defensively, holding the hosts to just 21.4% from the floor and 1-for-19 from three on the day.

That stellar defense started right away, as the WildCats held the Pacers to just four points over the first 13:30, jumping out to a 20-4 edge early.

After taking a 12-point lead into intermission, Randolph never let the hosts within 10 in the second half, turning away multiple rallies by the Pacers attempting to close the gap.

With the lead down to a dozen again, an 11-0 WildCat run midway through the second period put the game out of reach.

"In both games our defensive effort was on point," Druffel said of the weekend. "The gym provided a great atmosphere and it was a lot of fun to play in."

Sophomore Jacqueline Hockman joined Druffel as the only WildCats in double figures, as the guard had 10 points.

Sophomore Brie Holdren had nine points and nine rebounds, while first-year Alexis Calloway had eight in each category.

This marks the first time in program history in which the team has started 3-0 in consecutive seasons.

Randolph next has consecutive home games next week, starting with the team's ODAC opener against Roanoke on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m., ahead of Wednesday's 2 p.m., matinee against Gallaudet.
