Late Goal Pushes Nationally-Ranked CNU Past Men's Soccer

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Randolph rallied from an early hole to tie the game, but couldn't find a second equalizer this evening against No. 13/15 Christopher Newport.

Three years after Randolph defeated CNU, 2-1, in the NCAA Tournament, the Captains were on the right side of that scoreline.

The game was mostly played in the midfield early, with only one shot on goal apiece in the first third of the game.

Randolph's opportunity in the first 30 minutes came off a streaking Troy Jurney down the wing, but the sophomore ran out of room and his shot from a difficult angle was easily stopped.

Later in the half, junior Joe Uzdavinis and first-year El Hadji Beye countered off of a CNU corner, but couldn't make the most of the momentum to get a good shot off.

After two shots by sophomore Blake Heatherly were saved, CNU made good on their first shot on goal, as Patrick Burns's left-footed shot off of a low cross found the back of the net.

Early in the second half, Randolph turned the pressure on as a shot by sophomore Kyle Unruh was deflected just wide, but it set up consecutive corner kicks for the WildCats.

On the team's second attempt, sophomore Brian Anderson headed home the equalizer off the set piece from Heatherly in the 55th minute.

The teams remained on level terms for a dozen minutes, as Christopher Newport regained the lead on a breakaway that was placed to the right of junior goalkeeper CJ Stevens.

Stevens played well, making six saves, including two late to the top left corner of his goal, but Randolph couldn't earn a second equalizer.

Shots were 13-10 in the favor of CNU, while the Captains had one more corner kick, holding an 6-5 edge.

This game is Randolph's last non-conference tilt of the year, as the team resumes ODAC play with a trip to Bridgewater on Saturday.
