Randolph Rallies to Defeat Guilford in Key Volleyball Tilt

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph conceded the first set of today's match but overcame the deficit, winning 3-1 tonight over Guilford in the RAD Center.

The WildCats move to 16-8, assuring the team of a winning record for the second straight year after having not been above .500 since 1997.

Randolph won two of the first three points but conceded nine of the next 10 to Guilford, falling in a hole it couldn't dig out of, losing 25-21 in the first set.

The next two sets were completely different stories, as the WildCats dominated from start to finish, taking 25-13 and 25-9 decisions in those frames.

In those two sets, Randolph held the Quakers to a pedestrian .000 hitting percentage combined.

The sets were closed out by seniors Jordan Templin and Katherine Lesnak, respectively, both off of feeds from senior setter Kerry McMichael.

The Quakers jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the fourth set, looking to rally, but Randolph took the next five points on the service of junior Marissa McClinton to gain the upper hand.

Both teams exchanged little runs, with the set being tied at 8-8, 13-13, 14-14 and 15-15 before Randolph reeled off four points in a row, again on McClinton's service.

Guilford returned the favor, tying the match up at 20-20 and 21-21, but a service error and an assisted block by McMichael and McClinton put the WildCats within two points of the victory.

After a Guilford kill, McClinton was once again involved, joining Lesnak for a key block to set up match point.

The Quakers fought one off, but Lesnak once again put the set away with a kill, giving Randolph the win.

Templin finished with a match-high 23 kills, leaving her 21 shy of the single-season record in that category. McClinton had 11 and Lesnak added 10.

Senior Lexi Harrington had the match's most digs with 17, followed by 14 from Lesnak and 10 from McMichael.

McMichael had more than 40 assists for the seventh time this year, as her 42 leaves her 16 shy of the program's career mark in the category.

As a team, Randolph had 10 aces.

"We had a really slow start, but we stepped and got our heads together and remembered we love the game and we made it fun again," Lesnak said. "It gets us one step closer to our goal of making the ODAC tournament."
