Jurney's Hat Trick Helps Men's Soccer Earn Crucial ODAC Win

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Troy Jurney scored three times and assisted on another goal to tie two program scoring records tonight in a 4-0 win.

With tonight's weather forcasted to have consistent and dangerous lightning storms, Randolph and Randolph-Macon moved up the start time twice to try and beat the danger.

On a surprisingly clear night, however, the only thing striking was Jurney in Randolph's offensive half.

The sophomore wasted no time, scoring just 2:18 into the contest with a left-footed shot from 12 yards.

He accepted a long throw in from first-year Cristian Irigoyen and put it to the keeper's right to open the scoring.

Jurney was once again dangerous late in the half as he streaked down the left side of the field and slid a cross to the box, touched off by junior Grant Collier.

First-year Travis Brown was waiting for the ball to sneak through and put it home with confidence to double the lead before halftime.

Randolph had a chance to make the lead three just before the break, but sophomore Blake Heatherly's set piece from 40 yards hit the cross bar.

In the second half, Jurney once again struck early.

Heatherly sent a diagonal ball to the left side of the field, where Jurney beat a defender and sent a dangerous cross into the six.

A deflection put the ball home, giving Jurney his second goal of the day.

The hat trick came with just over 10 minutes remaining as first-year El Hadji Beye hit the post, but Jurney was there to clean up the chance to give the game its final scoreline.

Jurney joins Corey Sindle as the only WildCats with three goals and seven points in a game.

Sindle, who had two hat tricks in his career, finished with the same stat line as Jurney against Ferrum on Sept. 8, 2010.

"My teammates really found my feet and they put me in good situations," Jurney said. "I was in the right place at the right time and things fell for me."

On the other end, junior goalkeeper CJ Stevens only needed to make one stop off of a free kick to maintain Randolph's seventh shutout of the year.

The win snaps Randolph's longest winless streak in five years, as the WildCats were 0-2-2 over their last four games despite only being outscored 4-2 over that time period.

The WildCats move up to the No. 5 spot in the standings after the win, with a date with Virginia Wesleyan on the horizon. The rematch of last year's ODAC Championship will take place on Saturday at 7 p.m., in Norfolk.
