Physical Contest Leaves Randolph, Greensboro Level

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Tonight's men's soccer home opener was not short of action or physicality, but it was short a game-winner as Greensboro and Randolph finished 1-1.

Randolph (2-0-1) appeared to get on the scoreboard in the seventh minute after a free kick led to the ball being deflected into the net, but an offside call two yards out led to the score being overruled.

Blake Heatherly (Jacksonville, N.C./Jacksonville) keyed the team's second best opportunity of the half with a free kick right to the center of the six, but goalkeeper Manbi Nyepon snuffed out a pair of shots to keep the teams level at intermission.

At the break, Randolph held a 8-1 edge in shots over Greensboro (1-1-1).

Once again, a set piece opportunity gave the WildCats life, this time courtesy of Nick Cornell (Front Royal, Va./Warren Co.). The senior placed his free kick right at the feet of Julian Khalili (Falmouth, Va./Stafford), who placed home the second goal of his junior season.

With such a large edge in possession and shots, Randolph looked in control, but a fluke loose ball led to a foul inside of the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Greensboro. George Dimopoulos placed the ball low to the left of Carter Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley), tying the score.

Unfortunately for Smith, it marked the second straight year in which the senior conceded a penalty resulting in the first Greensboro goal of the game.

In overtime, the WildCats had all six shots, five of which were on goal, resulting in a 21-4 final tally in shots, but could not beat Nyepon again.

The Pride keeper was superb, stopping 12 shots, including a laser from Khalili that seemed destined to be the game's golden goal.

32 fouls and four cards were given in the physical contest, which featured an electric pace.

Randolph won't have much time to stew over the result, as the team is back in action tomorrow at 6:00 against Southern Virginia as part of a double-header that kicks off with women's soccer at 2:00.
