Battling Bishops Hold Off Late WildCat Charge to Win 1-0

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Coming off of a six-goal effort on Sunday, Randolph couldn't get its offense going in its home opener.

The WildCat women's soccer team (1-2) received two goals from Brittany Hammons (Newport News, Va./Grafton) and one apiece from Marielle Rando (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan), Ally Ramos (Manassas, Va./C.D. Hylton), Leslie Harrison (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and Megan Kruse (Centreville, Va./Centreville) in its fifth highest scoring game ever on Sunday, but couldn't get it going tonight, falling 1-0.

Despite holding a 13-5 edge in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on cage, a lone goal by Jade Gold in the eighth minute held up for N.C. Wesleyan (1-1).

After a Chelsea Laurens shot was saved by Caitlin Annunziata (Havelock, N.C./Havelock), the sophomore midfielder found her own rebound and slid a pass across the box to an unmarked Gold, who had the whole net to work with. After finding the top corner opposite the Laurens pass, the Battling Bishops had a lead that would stand the rest of the contest.

Haley Hopkins stopped all five shots on her net for a shutout, but not without moments of pause.

Alex Pinto (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) had Randolph's best chance of the night when the first-year midfielder lofted a shot over Hopkins, but it hit the crossbar. When Ramos hustled down the rebound, she was able to launch a shot, which sailed over the net.

The WildCats took four shots in the last 7:38, two of which required saves. The team's final shot came with just three seconds remaining, but Alissa Gembach (Lebanon, Va./Abingdon) got under the ball and sent it high as the clock ran out.

The team will return to action Saturday to host Notre Dame (Md.) at 2:00 as part of a double-header.
