Fighting Squirrels Find WildCats' Offense to be a Tough Nut to Crack

Box Score

STAUNTON, Va. -- Randolph swept all three sets from Mary Baldwin tonight to move to 4-1 on the young season.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-17, 25-13.

Dating back to the end of the 2012 season, Randolph (4-1) has now won six of seven matches, which marks the best span of seven matches for the program since 1997.

Marissa McClinton (Bealeton, Va./Liberty-Bealeton) led the way with nine kills and a superb .471 hitting percentage. That marked the best attack percentage in the sophomore's career in a match with at least five attempts.

Junior Jordan Templin (Ferrum, Va./Franklin Co.) finished with eight kills and shared the top spot in digs with classmate Lexi Harrington (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) at 10.

The WildCats never trailed in any set, with the Fighting Squirrels (0-5) forcing ties in each of the first two sets, but never overtaking the visiting 'Cats.

Head coach Johnathan Willis thought the Randolph net players were key in the victory.

"We adjusted a lot of shots at the net, which caused Mary Baldwin to have a lot of difficulty," he said.

"We also had a very balanced effort tonight. Eight of our players had kills and 10 had digs. That shows how much we're improving as a team."

Randolph was also powered by a strong service game, with 14 aces. McClinton, Templin and first-year Skyler Wood (Concord, Va./Rustburg) each had three to lead the way.
