WildCat Women's Lacrosse Draw Controls Way To 19-7 Win Over West Virginia Wesleyan

                LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's lacrosse team won the draw control battle 21-7 and junior Ashley Edwards (Sumerduck, VA/Liberty-Bealeton) broke the record for draws won with 12 as the WildCats earned a 19-7 victory over Division II West Virginia Wesleyan College Tuesday evening in a rainy afternoon from WildCat Stadium.

                With the victory, the WildCats (2-2) earned back-to-back victories for the first time in program history Tuesday. Randolph jumped out on top just 16 seconds into the game as junior Samie Maggard (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) netted an unassisted tally. The Bobcats (1-2) responded with goals by Taylor Holmes and Mackenzi Robinson to make the game 2-1.

                Randolph fought right back, going on a 6-2 goal spurt to take a 7-4 lead with 10:46 left in the first half. Jessica Hardman netted a goal with help from Kelly Steen for the Bobcats, but Randolph scored two more right before the half to take a 9-5 lead into break. Senior Danielle Haney (Norwood, PA/Interboro) scored three in the first half for Randolph, while Maggard and Taylor Klevenz (Cherrry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) each scored a pair for the hosts.

                After the soggy intermission, Randolph would dominate the second stanza, outscoring West Virginia Wesleyan 10-2. After the two teams exchanged a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of the half, the WildCats netted the games last eight goals of the game to roll to the victory. Haney finished with a game-best six goals, adding two helpers, two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

                Klevenz chalked up four tallies, three assists, five ground balls, and four draw controls, while Edwards had a great game with two goals, two assists, and two ground balls to add to the aforementioned school record of 12 draw controls. The 12 faceoff corrals were one more than the previous record of 11, set by Klevenz last year against Methodist University.

                Maggard netted a hat trick, scoring on all three of her shots, while junior Melanie Eisele (Kennett Square, PA/Sanford School) chalked up two goals. Sophomore middie Fran Klostermyer (Belk Mead, NJ/Montgomery) had three caused turnovers and a team-high six ground balls, while senior Ashley Stevens (Leicester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) had two caused turnovers.

                Sophomore keeper Samantha Fagone (Bayshore, NY/Bayshore) was solid in net, fending off 13 shots while making six saves on free position shots. Randolph outshot the Bobcats 33-25 and netted six of its 11 free position shots.

                West Virginia Wesleyan got a team-high three goals from Taylor Holmes, while Kelly Steen added two goals and one assist. Makenzi Robinson had a goal, an assist and four ground balls as well for WVWC.

                Randolph will look to earn its third consecutive win this Saturday, March 9 as the Avenging Angels of Meredith College come to WildCat Stadium for a 3 p.m. start.
