Randolph Men's Lacrosse Earns First Ever ODAC Win With 10-9 Barnburner Over Shenandoah

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior Jon O'Hara (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) scored the game-winning goal with 3:43 remaining in the contest and the WildCat defense held strong down the stretch as Randolph College earned its first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win with a 10-9 victory over Shenandoah University in play from WildCat Stadium Saturday evening.

The WildCats (3-5/1-1 ODAC) tallied just 11 seconds into the game, as junior Colton Wood (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) netted an unassisted strike to put Randolph up 1-0. SU came right back just 49 seconds later, tying the game on a Casey Edsall goal. The WildCats would then go on a four goal spurt over the next quarter, taking a 5-1 lead with Wood's 20th goal of the season ending the run.

Shenandoah netted back-to-back goals to make the score 5-3, but the WildCats put together another four-goal stretch before the half to take a 9-3 lead into the break. After intermission, the Hornets offense would come alive, as Bryan Pope netted the third quarter's lone tally to make the score 9-4 going into the fourth. Shenandoah notched the first five goals of the last period over a six minute stretch to tie the game at nine, with the last three coming from Matt Justice.

Randolph did not panic though and settled the tempo down the stretch. With just under four minutes to go, O'Hara got the ball 20 yards from goal on the left. O'Hara made a dodge to his left, eluding the SU defender and bounced a shot through the Hornet keeper's legs for the lead. The Hornets had a few shots at the end, the best an attempt by Colin Fowler, but the chance sailed wide and Randolph ran out the clock for the win.

Wood ended up with a team-best three goals for Randolph, dishing out an assist and picking up four ground balls as well. O'Hara had two goals on the evening, and five others tallied for Randolph. Senior John Croney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) posted his first score of the season for the WildCats, which was the Randolph's lone man-up goal.

Junior John Grundy (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) was seven-of-11 at the faceoff dot, and first-year Cam Davis (Gibsonville, N.C./Western Alamance) was great again, making 14 saves on the evening. Senior defender Ryan Blackwell (Brambleton, Va./Briar Woods) had three caused turnovers, and first-year Brian Crosby (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) added four ground balls.

Randolph outshot the Hornets by a narrow margin of 41-39, though the Hornets had a 44-34 edge in ground balls. SU was stellar on clears, going 21-of-22 on the night, and Randolph was efficient as well going 20-of-24. Justice scored a team-best four goals for Shenandoah, and Fowler added two more for the Hornets. Tyler Quinn made 14 stops in net for SU.

The WildCats will look to pick up their fourth win of the season on Wednesday, as they play host to Bryn Athyn College at 4:30 in non-conference play from WildCat Stadium.
