Men's Basketball Falls on Late Basket at CSI Tournament Championship

Box Score

NEW YORK -- In the College of Staten Island Tournament of Heroes title game, Randolph lost to the hosts by one.

Randolph (6-4) had its chances late, but out of a timeout with 18.3 seconds left, Randolph could not find the winning basket, falling 59-58.

Early, the team raced out to a nine-point first half lead. The team never trailed in the frame and ended the half on a buzzer-beater three from sophomore Jason Eddie (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day School).

CSI (7-2) used a 7-0 run early in the second half to tie the game for the first time at 40-40 and later took its first lead at 45-43.

Randolph responded with a 7-0 run of their own to regain an edge.

With 3:45 remaining, the Dolphins took the lead again after an 8-0 spurt, going ahead 55-54.

Thanks to another Eddie three, Randolph regained the lead with 3:15 left. That was Randolph's last basket of the game, however.

After a CSI layup, senior Dylan Shiflett (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) hit a free throw to put Randolph up 58-57, but each team would come up empty on its next three possessions, setting up a frantic finish.

Frankie Schettino hit on a layup with 18.3 seconds left, giving Staten Island the lead.

A missed Randolph layup and a frantic scramble at the buzzer left Randolph one point short of the win.

Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) led all scorers with 15 points, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. He also was tops among rebounders, with 11.

Randolph has now lost four games this year by a combined seven points. Three of those contests were one-point losses.

This is the first time that CSI has won this tournament, now in their 12th year of competition.

Randolph was the runner up in its only other appearance in this event, as well.
