Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Fresh off being ranked No. 17, the highest in program history, men's soccer controlled play in a 3-1 victory.
After a Hampden-Sydney (5-4-2, 2-2-1 ODAC) shot in the first minute, Randolph (10-0-1, 5-0 ODAC) kept the ball on the other end of the field for most of the next 19 minutes, earning five corner kicks and taking the next four shots before finally breaking through.
After a shot by senior Jacob Lusczek (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) was blocked, the ball squirted out to an open Joe Skaja (Yorktown, Va./Grafton). The senior quickly ripped it from 25 yards to open the scoring.
At the half, Randolph had a 13-3 edge in shots and all seven corners, but had a bit of a tenuous moment on defense just before the break, as a header over senior keeper Carter Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) hit the crossbar.
The WildCats kept the pressure on after intermission until senior Corey Sindle (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) broke free and beat the keeper with a smooth move left.
With Cameron McFarlane on the ground, the first-year keeper made the desperate move to grab Sindle to prevent a clear goal.
After discussion with the linesman, the referee pulled a red card out, giving Randolph a man advantage and a set piece from 20 yards out.
The forward was not denied a second time, as his free kick cleared a five-man wall to the opposite side of the net to double the lead.
For Sindle, it was his 46th career goal, earning the forward a spot in the ODAC's all-time top 10 list.
"It's a tremendous accomplishment for Corey Sindle and for the program as a whole," head coach Bryan Waggoner said. "It took all of his teammates over these four years to help him to hit this milestone."
Sindle had a shot move to eighth place on the list, but after beating new keeper Blake Carey, defender Davis Carter snuffed out a shot headed for the open net.
First-year Kyle Unruh (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) scored his second career goal later in the frame after a low pass from senior Celestin Kabamba (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) into the box.
Smith conceded a goal off of a corner kick late in the contest, but made the only other save he needed to make to keep the Tigers from more damage.
"It was a tremendous all-around performance today," Waggoner said. "The guys really played well for 90 minutes against a good Hampden-Sydney team. It is good to see them still doing the little things at this point in the season and working as hard as they did at the beginning of the year."
This win sets up a battle on Saturday for first place in the ODAC as Roanoke hosts the WildCats in a game of unbeatens at the top of the conference.
