Randolph Hosts Pink Game Against Roanoke for Breast Cancer Awareness Tonight

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Tonight's 7:00 women's soccer game will be a pink game supporting the Awareness Garden Foundation of Lynchburg and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

About at the WildCats:

Randolph enters a crucial section of its schedule as its next four games are all against teams clamoring for the final playoff spots.

Despite its 1-5 ODAC record, Randolph can make a huge jump into the playoff picture with a win today.

A win would put the WildCats on six points, level with this Roanoke squad and Randolph-Macon for the final playoff spot, with a game with the Yellow Jackets on the horizon.

About the Maroons:

Despite a losing record in ODAC play, 2-3, Roanoke holds a +6 goal differential after a pair of big wins last week, including a 4-0 victory over Randolph-Macon to overtake the Yellow Jackets for eighth place in the league.

Overall, Roanoke is 4-6-1. The team opened 2-1-1 but lost five straight before its recent two game spurt.

Carolyn Sarbacher is second in the conference in save percentage and fourth in goals against average.

About the matchup:

Both of these teams have faced Washington & Lee on the road, with both teams failing to score in losses.

Against a Shenandoah team that defeated Randolph, Roanoke took 100:15 to score, but won early in double overtime, 1-0.

Roanoke has won every matchup between these two programs since a 3-2 victory by the WildCats in 1984.

WildCat to watch:

The last time junior Brittany Hammons (Newport News, Va./Grafton) was dubbed the WildCat to watch, the forward scored the first goal in the team's game against Eastern Mennonite.

Since that game, however, Hammons hasn't scored for the WildCats. She entered that game leading the ODAC in shooting percentage, but has now come up empty on 11 straight shots, her longest drought of the season.

With Randolph needing a win not only to earn points, but to prevent Roanoke from earning more, the offense needs to be hitting on all cylinders.

About the cause:

The Awareness Garden Foundation of Lynchburg honors the families, friends and caregivers whose lives have been touched by cancer. The garden provides the opportunity to honor loved ones with engraved bricks and other naming opportunities. It is a peaceful place to go to reflect on one's journey of healing.

The Awareness Garden Endowment Fund was established to foster cancer awareness with educational outreach programs throughout our community and to contribute to scholarships for those affected by cancer or interested in cancer-related work.

In addition, the program helps to bring programs about cancer prevention, detection and treatment to community citizens and groups. In the last seven years, with the help of generous donations the program has given over $54,000, through the scholarship program, to deserving individuals whose lives have been affected by cancer.
