Sindle's Golden Goal Free Kick Keeps No. 21 Randolph Unbeaten

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Men's soccer earned a gritty 2-1 victory with a pair of free-kick goals.

Senior Corey Sindle (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) lined up for Randolph (9-0-1, 4-0 ODAC) after a tackle brought a yellow card and a free-kick two yards outside the penalty arc halfway through the first overtime.

The ODAC's leading scorer went low to the near corner to set off a celebration.

The forward is now one goal shy of the 10th spot on the ODAC's all-time leaderboard in career goals, with 45.

Eastern Mennonite (2-9, 0-5 ODAC) fought valiantly, tying up the game in the second half with a breakaway goal, but came up short after conceding numerous chances late.

First-year Blake Heatherly (Jacksonville, N.C./Jacksonville) had Randolph's regulation goal with a free kick of his own in the first half.

It was the defender's third goal of the season and the second off a free kick in as many games. He had the game-winner in the mid-week victory over Randolph-Macon late in the second half, as well.

The WildCats had the edge in play, with a 35-12 advantage in shots. Sindle and classmate Jake Hood (New Market, Md./Linganore) each hit the woodwork, coming within inches of supplying Randolph's second goal.

Senior goalkeeper Carter Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) stopped four of the five shots on goal he faced, only faltering when left alone on the EMU breakaway.

EMU's Andrew Yoder made seven saves but was forced to leave after regulation due to an injury. His replacement, Peter Dutcher, turned away two shots before conceding the winner.

Randolph is now 4-2 all-time against the Royals with five of the six games decided by one goal.

The WildCats host Hampden-Sydney next with a crucial road battle against current conference leader, Roanoke, on Saturday.
