Hornets Hand #15 Randolph First Loss of 2013 Season

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Head coach Bryan Waggoner warned his players that Randolph's slow starts would eventually come back to haunt the WildCats.

Through 14 games, Randolph (13-1-1, 8-1 ODAC) managed to overcome any slow starts to have the best start and 14-game stretch in program history.

Tonight, Waggoner's words of caution proved true, as the WildCats dugs themselves too big of a hole to recover from against rival Lynchburg (8-5-2, 6-2-1 ODAC).

"Lynchburg, all credit to them, the first 15 to 20 minutes had their high energy and we didn't match that," Waggoner said. "We've started games slow and I warned the guys that it's going to hurt us at some point and it did tonight."

In those first 20 minutes, Lynchburg struck twice to get the home crowd into it.

A pair of finesse one-on-ones beat senior keeper Carter Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley), first on a chip, then on a low shot, to give the hosts the early lead.

20 minutes later, a penalty kick goal put Lynchburg up three.

Randolph rallied and scored right before the half after a Nick Cornell (Front Royal, Va./Warren Co.) free kick.

The senior, whose two set-piece assists gave Randolph the win over these Hornets in the 2011 ODAC championship, once again stung Lynchburg, as his feed to first-year Troy Jurney (Camp Lejeune, N.C./White Oak) allowed Jurney to set up senior Joe Skaja (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) to cut the lead to 3-1.

Jurney scored in the second half after senior John Adams (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) crossed a low ball across the box, cutting the lead to one with 25 minutes left.

Randolph, who held a 25-11 edge in shots, couldn't finish the comeback, falling 3-2.

The loss breaks the longest winning streak (11) and unbeaten streak (14) in program history.

The WildCats still need just one win in their last two games to lock up the No. 1 seed in the ODAC tournament. The 'Cats are back in action next Saturday at 7 p.m., for Homecoming.
