Two Rando Goals Power Women's Soccer to First ODAC Win

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph broke a losing skid in big way, with an impressive ODAC win over Guilford.

Randolph (3-7, 1-4 ODAC) had numerous chances but it took almost an hour to finally break through.

After a scoreless first half with the WildCats holding a 12-4 edge in shots, the team increased the tempo and earned multiple opportunities.

Off a free kick from Marielle Rando (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan), the senior played Ally Ramos (Manassas, Va./C.D. Hylton) short with Guilford (0-12, 0-5 ODAC) expecting a ball over the top. The sophomore one-touched pass to junior Brittany Hammons (Newport News, Va./Grafton) for a quick shot, which was barely snuffed out.

Minutes later, Hammons set up Rando on a cross with the forward behind the defense. The shot, which seemed destined for the net, slipped by the post to keep the game scoreless.

Rando would not miss her next chance, as she took a deep ball from first-year back Alissa Gembach (Lebanon, Va./Abingdon) over the top of the defense. The Powhatan native converted to break the deadlock.

Rando netted the second goal as well, which was unassisted but certainly not unaided.

First-year Maggie Croft (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) crossed a pass into the area, which proved to be dangerous. After a failed clearance, pressure from Hammons forced a defensive miscue, allowing Rando a clean volley from the center of the box.

First-year goalkeeper Caitlin Annunziata (Havelock, N.C./Havelock) earned the second shutout of her rookie season by making three saves.

Her counterpart and the ODAC's leader in saves, Abby Gove, stopped 15 of the 17 shots Randolph got on cage.

"I was very pleased with the effort of our team," head coach Kevin Porterfield said after the game. "We pressured the ball well and I was happy with our attacking mindset. The defense came up with several key stops and Caitlin did a great job in net to get the clean sheet. It's great to get our first ODAC win."

Randolph had lost nine straight games to Guilford before breaking the streak last year and now has its first-ever winning streak against the Quakers.

The team is now 3-0 this year when scoring more than one goal.

After a road trip Saturday to Washington and Lee, the team returns home to face Roanoke on Tuesday night.
