LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph wrapped up its fall with its sole dual match of the season against Southern Virginia.
The match got off to a great start for the WildCats (1-0) with a 3-0 edge after doubles.
Sophomore Dina Velazco (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/Colegio Las Fuertes) and junior Patricia Verdezoto (Cuenza, Azuay, Ecuador/Bilingue Interamericano) took the win at top doubles with a 8-6 victory over Maren Connolly and Lauren Morrison.
First-years Alison Henry (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and Jenna Sweet (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) rallied from down 7-4, with their backs against the wall, to earn a 9-7 win over the pair of Rebekah Reid and Kirsten Laurence.
At third doubles, junior Danielle Lewis (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception) and first-year Heather Parra (Wilmington, N.C./Eugene Ashley) put forth a strong effort in an 8-3 win over Brooke Sutton and Katie Durrant.
In singles play, Randolph took the top five from SVU (1-2), with straight set wins at No. 1 through No. 4 and a pro set win at No. 5
Tiandre Forde (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellum), playing at No. 6, won the first set but the junior fell in a super-tiebreaker.
"Southern Virginia always has a solid team," head coach Jamie Megginson said. "For us to come out and really compete and stay focused shows a great improvement from the Sweet Briar Tournament. I'm happy with the progress we're making."
The team is now off for the winter, but will return to action in February.
