WildCat Men's Tennis Starts Season at 2012 Panther Scramble

                FERRUM, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team competed in the 2012 Panther Scramble this past weekend, hosted by Ferrum College. The WildCats had some success at the tournament, winning the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles flights while taking the No. 3 doubles' bracket.

                In the "D" singles' bracket, junior Jason Corsbie (Kingston, Jamaica/American International) earned an early 2,1 victory over Jacob Bivaris from Ferrum. Teammate Dan Phung (Hanoi, Vietnam/International) earned a thrilling three-set win on the bottom half of the bracket, winning 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (12-10) over Roanoke College's Jacob Morris. The two would battle it out in the finals, with Corsbie earning the title with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

                Over in the "E" singles flight, Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) made quick work of his first opponent from Roanoke College, as did sophomore Hart Gillespie (Hurt, VA/Altavista) on the bottom half of the bracket. Dales and Gillespie played for the championship of the bracket, with Dales earning a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 three-set win.

                Down in the "F" singles alignment, Yeachen Lee (Kisubi, Uganda/Rift Valley Academy) earned a win in his first match with scores of four and two. Sandeep Poudyal (Kathmandu, Nepal/St. Paul's School) earned a straight set win over Ferrum's Demetry Sawyers, and then knocked off Lee in the finals 6-1, 6-3 for the bracket win.

                In the "A" doubles flight, sophomore's Daniil Lyalko (Reisterstown, MD/Park School of Baltimore) and Teague Nelson (Camano Island, WA/Stanwood) rebounded from a loss in the prelims to earn the consolation victory with a 8-2 win.

                At "C" doubles, the WildCats earned another championship, as Phung and Sandeep earned back-to-back wins. The pair defeated a pair from Ferrum 8-1 before knocking off teammate Corsbie, who was paired with Ferrum's Sawyers for the event, 8-4 in the finals.

                Randolph College will be back in action Saturday, September 22 at 1 p.m. as it hosts Lynchburg College.
