LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's soccer team scored three goals in less than three minutes in the second half to pull away, as the WildCats knocked off the Kingsmen of California Lutheran University 4-0 in the 2012 home opener from WildCat Stadium Friday night.
Randolph (2-1-1) seemed to be out of rhythm for much of the first half, but did bury its best chance of the half on its first shot of the game. At the 11:48 mark, junior Jacob Lusczek (Fredericksburg, VA/Chancellor) broke down the right sideline, and after heading up the end line found Jacob Hood (New Market, VA/Linganore). Hood did not bother taking a touch and instead one-timed the pass into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. For Hood, it was his first of the season and 10th of his career.
The rest of the half was very spotty, as both teams struggled to maintain possession. Randolph finished the first half with seven shots, but CLU (1-1) keeper Rey Rivera-Ramos made four saves to keep the Kingsmen within one.
After the intermission, the WildCats again were slow to get started but when they did, the offense sure clicked. Randolph would score on its next three shots, with the first coming from Corey Sindle (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) on a lovely passing play. Junior John Adams (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) played a great long ball for Celestin Kabamba (Woodbridge, VA/C.D. Hylton), who crossed the ball to Sindle. Sindle gathered, turned and fired to the left of Rivera-Ramos for the 2-0 lead.
Sindle was back at it only 26 seconds later, but Lusczek was the one who made most of the play. Luszcek weaved through defenders as he did all night and played a perfect through ball to Sindle, who buried the shot off the keeper's hands and into the net for his second of the year. The goal was Sindle's 26th of his career, and the assist moved Lusczek into fourth place on the all-time list at Randolph.
Not to be outdone, Hood answered for the WildCats with his second of the match, this time being set up by junior Nick Cornell (Front Royal, VA/Warren Co.). After a turnover by CLU, Cornell fed Hood at the top of the 18, and after he made a move to his right got the shot off that beat the keeper to the left post.
That was plenty for the WildCats, as sophomore CJ Stevens (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) and senior Ryan Woloshin (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) combined to make three saves in the shutout. Randolph outshot its opponent on the game 13-8, though Cal Lutheran posted a 6-3 edge in the corner kick department.
The WildCats will return to their home turf this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. as the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College come calling for a pivotal non-conference match.
