LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team trailed 4-1 with the final four matches going on, but took all four to winning a come-from-behind thriller over Lynchburg College Saturday afternoon in the first dual match of the 2012-13 season for the WildCats.
Randolph (1-0) took an early lead at No. 3 doubles, as Hart Gillespie (Hurt, VA/Altavista) and Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) teamed up to win 8-0. LC took No. 2 doubles to even the match, and though the No. 1 pairing of Jason Corsbie (Kingston, Jamaica/American International) and Daniil Lyalko (Reisterstown, MD/Park School of Baltimore) battled back from a 5-0 deficit to force a playoff, the pair couldn't earn the last double's win, falling 9-8 (7-4).
Individual action was next and No. 2 singles went to the Hornets, as did No. 1 singles to make the match score 4-1. That's when the tables would turn, as the four remaining outcomes would need to fall in the Randolph win column to earn the match victory. Corsbie picked up a win at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory, and then Shaun Chopp (Williamsburg, VA/Hampton Roads Academy) won in straight sets, four and four.
Still trailing by one at 4-3, Dales evened the match at four wins apiece as he won a tight 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 decision at No. 5 singles. That put the match in the hands of Gillespie, who was up to the task. Gillespie won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 2-6 to force a super-tiebreaker. Gillespie would jump out and front and earn the 10-7 super win to capture the match for the WildCats.
"We really showed a lot of heart," said third-year head coach Jamie Megginson. "We got down early, but we had some big wins and also our 3-4-5-6 really stepped up. Proud of how they rallied out there."
The WildCats will now look forward to another dual match at home against the Knights of Southern Virginia October 11 at 4 p.m. on the Randolph Tennis
