WildCat Men's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Tilt to Greensboro 2-0

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC – The Randolph College men's soccer team played almost 70 minutes of the game down a man due to a first half red card and couldn't recover, falling to the Pride of Greensboro College 2-0 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

Randolph (0-1-1) was dictating play over the first 20 minutes of the game, taking the first three shots of the game and pinning the Pride (1-1-0) deep. The game changed 23:04 into in the first half, as the WildCats' starting keeper Carter Smith (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) was sent off after a foul on a GC player. Smith was going for the ball, but collided with the GC attacker, and the referee saw fit to award a penalty kick and send the visitors down to 10 men.

Greensboro's Logan Paussa stepped up and scored the ensuing penalty kick to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. The WildCats did not go away though, still managing to outshoot their hosts 6-2 in the opening period. After the halftime break, GC netted an insurance goal 76 minutes into the game thanks to a Morgan Stevenson tally. On the play, Stevenson's initial shot was saved by keeper CJ Stevens (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis), but the rebound came back to him and knocked it in for his first goal of the year.

Randolph was unable to muster a comeback Sunday, as the WildCats dropped their first game by two or more goals since the 2010 season ender against Lynchburg College. Junior Corey Sindle (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) had three shots to lead the WildCats, as did fellow junior Jacob Hood (New Market, MD/Linganore). Stevens ended with three saves, and Pride keeper Manbi Nyepon stopped all four shots on cage.

The stat totals were very similar, as the two teams each posted 10 shots apiece though Randolph earned six of the game's nine corner kicks. Greensboro's John Longfellow and Randolph's Coulton Watson (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) each were booked with cautions.

The WildCats will look to earn their first win of the season Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Fayetteville, NC for a non-conference battle with Methodist University at 5 p.m.
