Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA – Sophomore striker Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) posted two goals including the game-winner with 1:27 left in the first overtime period to give the Randolph College women's soccer team a thrilling 3-2 victory in the 2012 season opener over Ferrum College in non-conference play from WildCat Stadium.
The game-winner for Hammons came on a great individual effort for the WildCats (1-0). Hammons took a pass about 30 yards from goal. Hammons weaved her way through multiple defenders and then unleashed a rocket shot that kissed off the left post and into the goal causing Hammons to be mauled by her teammates just inside the FC goal box.
Hammons, who finished with a team-high six goals in 2011, picked up right where she left off scoring the first goal of the game just 3:35 into the contest. Junior Marielle Rando (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) bent a long ball over the center back which Hammons ran onto, and stuck the shot right inside the post for an early 1-0 Randolph advantage.
The Panthers (0-1) came right back six minutes later, as Morgan Funck scored her first collegiate goal unassisted at 9:30 to tie the match at one. Ferrum would take its first lead of the game at 33:59 of the game, as Kara Pegram received a pass 15 yards from net in the center of the goal mouth, and rocketed a right foot shot to the left netting of the goal for a 2-1 Panther lead.
After halftime, Randolph seemed to be the fresher team, as the WildCats used more substitutes than Ferrum. Senior Brianne Roth (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) became the second Grafton High School product to score for the WildCats on the evening, as Roth knotted the score at two at 49:23 of the game.
After a long run from first-year Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro), she dumped a pass to Roth, who nailed a shot with her right foot, her off foot, that Ferrum keeper Caitlyn Deaton just watched sail into the right side of the goal. The goal for Roth was her first since her first season with the WildCats back in 2009.
Ferrum almost went ahead with only eight minutes to go, but Hunter Gibson (Newport News, VA/Denbigh Baptist) made a great save to keep the game deadlocked at two. In overtime, Randolph held the strong advantage in possession, and had two corner kicks before the eventual game winner.
Hammons had a game-best six shots, putting all six on frame. The Randolph back line played well, especially first-year Erin Carter (Vienna, VA/James Madison) and senior Ashley Stevens (Leicester, MA/St. Peter-Marian). Gibson made three saves for the WildCats, while Deaton had eight stops.
Randolph will look to earn back-to-back wins Sunday at noon as the Bison of Gallaudet University come to WildCat Stadium for another non-conference match.
