WISE, VA — The Randolph College men's tennis team traveled to The University of Virginia at Wise Sunday for a non-conference match, but couldn't get the contest in before the rains forced the cancellation of Sunday's proceedings with Randolph leading 3-2 in the match.
The WildCats jumped out to 2-1 lead after doubles play, thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 3 pairs. First-year Daniil Lyalko (Reisterstown, MD/Park School of Baltimore) teamed with Shaun Chopp (Newport News, VA/Hampton Roads Academy) to earn an 8-6 victory. Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/ Albuquerque) and Hart Gillespie (Hurt, VA/Altavista) posted a win as well at No. 3 with a score of 8-2.
Lyalko posted another win in singles play, earning a straight set victory with scores of 6-3, 6-4. That's when the rain came, making it unable to finish the match. The individual match scores still count towards the player's overall season record if play was finished in the respective match, but the team overall mark remains at 4-8 for the WildCats.
Randolph will get back into Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Tuesday afternoon with an important road match at Roanoke College at 3:30 p.m.
