Randolph Women's Lax Battles But Falls to Virginia Wesleyan 20-11

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Randolph College led 5-4 midway through the first half but a 8-0 run right before the half lifted visiting Virginia Wesleyan College to a 20-11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory in women's lacrosse action from WildCat Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The WildCats (1-3/0-1 ODAC) fell behind early as Virginia Wesleyan posted the first goal of the game, an unassisted tally from Taylor Harding 58 seconds in. Sophomores Ashley Edwards (Sumerduck, VA/Liberty-Bealeton) one-timed a pass from Taylor Klevenz (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) to tie the game, and Randolph went ahead with a Samie Maggard (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) tally three minutes in.

Randolph led 4-2 after an Edwards free position goal but VWC (2-4/1-1 ODAC) rallied to tie the game with 20 minutes to play in the first period. Randolph retook a one goal lead on a blistering free position shot from Danielle Haney (Norwood, PA/Interboro) , but VWC would tally the game's next eight strikes, two each coming from Alex Lambert, Natalie Belva and Nikki Salyers to make the score 12-5.

Randolph did get a great goal right before the half, as Courtney Kellogg (Tewksbury, MA/Central Catholic) intercepted a clearing attempt with under five seconds left in the half, and sent a quick pass to Haney five yards in front of goal. Haney caught and fired, beating the Marlin keeper two tenths of a second before the horn to send the game to half with VWC up 12-6.

The Marlins wouldn't let up though, scoring four of the first five goals out of the break to 16-7 lead and coasted to the nine-goal victory. Klevenz finished with three goals and an assist, registering five ground ball pickups and nine draw controls. Edwards posted three goals and four draw controls, while Haney added a hat trick as well.

Maggard netted a pair of tallies for the WildCats, while Nushaa Kaz (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) had an assist as well. Sophomore defender Melanie Eisele (Kennett Square, PA/Sanford School) had five ground balls for Randolph, and first-year keeper Samantha Fagone (Bayshore, NY/Bayshore) posted nine saves.

Salyers had five goals to lead all scorers, and Lambert ended with four finishes. Belva, Courtney Shelton and Mari Carmichael all chalked up two goals apiece for VWC, which won the shot battle 38-25.

Randolph will return to action Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. as Bridgewater College comes to WildCat Stadium for an ODAC matchup.
