Box Score GREENSBORO, NC – The Randolph College men's soccer team scored three goals in the span of a 4:33 and the defense was stout all night as the WildCats advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinals with a 3-0 whitewashing of Guilford College Saturday evening.
The victory marked the third consecutive season the WildCats earned an appearance in the semifinals, and the second year in the last three seasons Randolph (9-6-3) has knocked off the Quakers in the quarterfinals. Randolph will play No. 1 seed Roanoke College Wednesday in Salem, VA at a time to be determined.
Randolph came out of the gates flying, as it possessed the ball for most of the beginning of the half. Early on, the WildCats had great chances, the best coming from junior John Adams (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass), but his attempt was saved.
The scoring barrage started at the 13:31 mark of the contest, as Jacob Lusczek (Fredericksburg, VA/Chancellor) ripped a shot into the left netting for the 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Adams redeemed himself with a goal, as he beat his defender down the left sideline, and curled his shot inside the near post to double the 'Cat lead to 2-0.
Just 1:55 later in the game, the WildCats would finish the scoring as John Vecchietti (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) scored off a deflection. Vecchetti ripped a one-time shot that bounced off a defender, and GC keeper Michael MacVane had no chance as the ball careened into the empty net. Randolph would continue to hold the momentum going into halftime.
After the break, Guilford (10-8) pressed the issue more in the second half, but Will Wolf (Goldsboro, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) and the rest of the WildCat back line were up to the task. Junior keeper Carter Smith (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) returned to his hometown in grand style, making five stops in a shutout performance.
The WildCats outshot their opponents 17-9 on the evening, while earning a slight 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Randolph was spurred by its great support Saturday, as the WildCat crowd travelled extremely well.
On the other side of the bracket, Virginia Wesleyan knocked off No. 3 seed Lynchburg College 1-0, while No. 2 seed Washington and Lee University earned a 1-0 win over Bridgewater College. For more information on the ODAC Tournament, log onto the official home of the ODAC at www.odaconline.com.
