Box Score 2 ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The Randolph College volleyball team took the five-hour trip to St. Mary's College to partake in the Seahawk Invitational Friday evening, but couldn't capture a victory in the first two matches, falling to host St. Mary's and Stevenson University.
Randolph dropped a four-set match to the Seahawks in the first contest of the day, falling to Stevenson in three games. In the opening match, the WildCats (7-22) struggled to his in the first couple of games, combining for only 17 kills on 66 attempts. Randolph would respond though, earning a third-set victory after hitting .333 in the third game. The WildCats earned couldn't keep the momentum, falling in four to the Seahawks (18-7).
Randolph was led by the 13 kills and eight digs from sophomore Jordan Templin (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co.), who currently sits with 294 kills on the season. Her total of 294 is the second-most in a season ever, and she is likely to become only the second player in WildCat history with 300 or more kills if she earns six over the two matches Saturday.
First-year Celine Rhodes (Barhamsville, VA/Jamestown) had nine kills, five digs and four assisted blocks for Randolph. Rhodes now only five assisted blocks behind current teammate Sam Sublett (Bedford, VA/Staunton River) for the single-season record. Sublett broke a school record for the same category Friday, as she became the WildCat's all-time assisted block leader with 127 in her career after chalking up a pair in the loss to St. Mary's.
Sophomore Lexi Harrington (Clemmons, NC/West Forsyth) registered a game-high 19 digs in the contests, which moved her into third on the single-season dig chart. She now has 418 on the season, which surpassed Ginger Raymond and her 406 digs back in 1997. Harrington is 38 digs behind the single season record of 456, set by Lindsay Wood in 2008. Harrington would need to average 19 digs in the final two matches to get there.
In the final match of the afternoon, Randolph struggled to get much going against the nationally-ranked Mustangs, who improved their record to 31-2. Randolph was paced by the six kills from junior outside Sydney Henson (Winston-Salem, NC/Ronald Reagan), while Grayce Darden (Martinsville, VA/Martinsville) had five kills and four assisted blocks. Harrington had 11 digs in the second match of the evening.
Randolph will finish its season Saturday, taking on Hollins University and Lycoming College in more play from the Seahawk Invitational.
