Southern Virginia Hands Randolph Men 2-0 Defeat On Senior Night Wednesday

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Despite being outshot by 14 Wednesday evening, visiting Southern Virginia University netted a pair of second-half goals in earning a 2-0 non-conference victory over the Randolph College men's soccer team on Senior Night from WildCat Stadium.

The WildCats (8-6-3) honored seniors Nicholas DiLodovico (Cobb Island, MD/Laplata), Sam McGarrity (Midlothian, VA/James River) and Ryan Woloshin (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) before the game, as the three were all tabbed with starting assignments. Randolph had chance after chance in the opening half, but SVU (10-7) keeper Robert Key made some amazing saves to keep the game scoreless.

In the fourth minute, Randolph looked like it had an early lead by Key stopped a one-on-one with Tyler Gilchrist (Bedford, VA/Liberty). On the ensuing corner kick, sophomore Scott Holthaus (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) drilled the crossbar with a header. In the 13th minute, reserve back Adam Gilley (West Point, VA/Walsingham) had a fantastic opportunity, but his glancing header was saved off the line by a diving Key.

The hosts kept the pressure on in the first half, outshooting the Knights 11-2 in the first half. The best chance of the first stanza for SVU came in the closing seconds of the period, as Adam Freeman took a great free kick that was going into the top left corner. First-year keeper Shelby Streeter (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg Christian), making his first appearance ever for the WildCats, made an unbelievable diving save to deny the Knights.

After halftime, Randolph again nearly took the lead as a shot by Corey Sindle (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) was swatted away by Key. Woloshin, who came back into net after suffering a first-half injury, made a pair of saves over the next 10 minutes to keep the game deadlocked at zero.

In the 63rd minute, SVU got on the board after a free kick earned a corner kick. Nathaniel Sellis took the corner and Zac McCulloch headed the service home for his fourth goal of the season. In the 68th minute, WildCat sophomore Seth Dorman (Lynchburg, VA/Liberty Christian) had a chance on a breakaway, but Key came out to challenge and stopped Dorman before kicking the rebound away.

The Knights would add an insurance goal in the 90th minute, as Sellis scored with help from Freeman to end the night for the WildCats. Randolph outshot its opponent 24-10 on the evening, and picked up 10 of the game's 14 corner kicks awarded. Key posted a clean sheet for SVU, stopping all six shots put on net. Woloshin made three saves in goal for the WildCats, who rested some starters in preparation for Saturday's ODAC Tournament quarterfinal.

Randolph will now set its attention on the second season, as it will travel to Greensboro, NC Saturday for action in the 2012 ODAC Tournament. The WildCats will be hosted by Guilford College with kick-off set for 7 p.m. at the Armfield Athletic Center on the campus of Guilford. Live stats and video of the contest will be available.
