Amanda Cooper Scores Game Winner In 3-0 Randolph Win Over Eastern Mennonite

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA -- The Randolph College women's soccer team eclipsed its 2011 win total Tuesday with a 3-0 shutout victory over Eastern Mennonite University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from the EMU Turf Field.

Randolph won its sixth game of the season, which is the sixth-most in school history for a season. The six wins surpassed the five victories in each of the previous two seasons. Randolph now sits at 6-5 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

The play was slow to get going in the first half, as both teams could not maintain possession. Randolph seemed to have gone ahead early in the game, as Brianne Roth (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) finished a through ball but was whistled for being off-side on the play. The WildCats got the eventual game-winner at 31:51 of the contest, as Amanda Cooper (Canyon Lake, TX/Smithson Valley) converted a deflected pass from first-year Erin Carter (Vienna, VA/James Madison).

Randolph ended up winning the first-half shot total, 4-2, in a half that lacked much offensive firepower. The game opened up for the visitors in the second half, as sophomore Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) buried a breakaway goal in the 54th minute to double the lead to two.

The final goal came from junior Marielle Rando (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan), who ran onto a loose ball and pushed her first touch past the diving keeper into the back of the net to close the game's scoring. The back line for the WildCats played exceptionally all night, highlighted by the play of Carter and Elisa Otero (Chevy Chase, MD/St. John's).

Randolph outshot EMU (3-7-1/0-5-1 ODAC) 11-0 in the second half, finishing with a shot edge of 15-2. Ashley Stevens (Leicester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) made one save to register her second shutout of the season, while Becca Borg and Jenna Beck combined to make three saves in net for the Royals.

Randolph will return home and get set to take on the Avenging Angels of Meredith College at noon Sunday in WildCat Stadium.
