Box Score GREENSBORO, NC – Sophomore keeper Hunter Gibson (Newport News, VA/Denbigh Baptist) made 12 saves and first-year midfielder Ally Ramos (Manassas, VA/C.D. Hylton) scored two second-half goals as the Randolph College women's soccer team booked a big 5-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Guilford College Wednesday afternoon.
The victory meant so many things to the WildCats, first of all moving Randolph (8-5/3-5 ODAC) into the eighth spot in the ODAC standings and helping the team to a situation where it could control its destiny over the next two weeks. Also, the triumph was the first over Guilford since 2002, marking only the second victory ever over the Quakers.
Randolph opened the scoring on its first time into GC's side of the field, as Marielle Rando (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) was in on a breakaway. A Guilford defender pulled her down about 30 yards from goal and Randolph was awarded a free kick. Senior Samantha Wittie (Canyon Lake, TX/Smithson Valley) stepped up and drilled the attempt past the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
After that time, Gibson would keep her team in the game thanks to seven first-half stops including four from point-blank range. Just before halftime, Cori Karoly was just in front of goal, but her attempt banged off the post and the rebound shot was blocked and cleared.
After intermission, the offense came to live for both teams, with six goals being scored in the second half. On a counter attack only four minutes into the second, Rando took a crossing pass from Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) in front of net and beat Abby Gove for the 2-0 advantage. GC came right back, cutting the lead in half with a goal from Kelli Uresti 62:35 into the match.
The host Quakers would knot the game at two only seven minutes later, as Uresti scored from 20 yards away for the equalizer. Showing the composure they have all season, the WildCats did not wilt and instead scored four minutes later thanks to a Hammons breakaway tally. Just after the kickoff, Ramos scored her first of the day unassisted to double the lead to two with 15 minutes left.
Ramos put the game away with 2:47 left in the contest, as she chipped the keeper and sent Randolph to its third ODAC win of the year. For Ramos, she has now scored five goals this season on just six shots, the best shooting percentage in the conference. Gibson made five saves in the second half, finishing with 12.
The Quakers outshot the WildCats on the night 29-10 and earned all seven corner kicks in the contest, but the backline of Randolph again was able to fend off many attempts.
Randolph will continue its important week with another big road game, this time travelling to Emory, VA for an ODAC affair with the Wasps of Emory & Henry College Saturday at 2 p.m.
