Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA – The WildCats of Randolph College continued their hot start Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 whitewashing of Berkeley College (NJ) in non-conference action from WildCat Stadium. The six goal output was the second-most in program history, surpassed only by Saturday's seven goal performance.
Also with the win, the WildCats captured the championship of the four-team Tiger/WildCat Classic, hosted by Hampden-Sydney College and Randolph. Both the Tigers and Randolph went 2-0, but the goal differential for the WildCats topped that of H-SC. The WildCats have now posted their best start in program history with the 3-0 record. Randolph was 2-1 after three games in 2009.
Sophomores Will Wolf (Goldsboro, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) , Nick Cornell (Front Royal, VA/Warren Co.) and John Adams (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) earned All-Classic honors, while Corey Sindle (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) was tabbed as the Classic Most Valuable Player.
The WildCats (3-0-0) wasted no time getting on the board, as sophomore Jacob Hood (New Market, MD/Linganore) deposited a great through ball from senior Timmy Songer (Windsor, VA/Windsor) just 47 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Tristan Luxner (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) doubled the lead to 2-0 at the 22:21 mark with help from Tyler Gilchrist (Bedford, VA/Liberty) .
First-year Seth Dorman (Lynchburg, VA/Liberty Christian) struck for his first collegiate goal in the 29th minute, as he chipped a shot over a charging keeper and into the back of the net for a 3-0 advantage. After halftime, Cornell and Sindle each chalked up their third goals of the weekend to make the score 5-0.
After that point, frustrations began to boil to the brim with the play becoming very physical. In the 58 minute, a Berkeley foul resulted in a free kick for Randolph but before that could happen, the Knight's Tyler Malkenson was given a straight red card for trying to instigate an altercation. Berkeley played the rest of the game with 10 men.
The game would continue its physical nature, and in the 75th minute the WildCats earned their first penalty kick since September 27, 2008 against Eastern Mennonite University. Unlike that kick which was stopped, senior Nick Hudson (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) calmly drilled the penalty into the right corner of the net for his first of the season.
The penalty goal was Randolph's first since August 31, 2008 when former Wildcat Eddy Ratianarivo finished one against Catholic. The other story of the game was the aggressive play of the WildCat midfield and backline, which held the Knight offense to only three shots all contest and one corner kick. The WildCats ended the game with 15 corner kicks, which set the school record for corners in a contest.
Junior Ryan Woloshin (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) got his first collegiate start Sunday and made the most of it, recording his first clean sheet while making two saves. The WildCats outshot the Knights 25-3 on the game, which was marred by 27 total fouls. Thomas Frangieh made five saves in relief action for Berkeley.
The WildCats will now start a four-game road trip over the next couple weeks, with their first stop being at Haverford College for a two-tournament this Saturday and Sunday afternoons against Gwynedd-Mercy College and Goucher College, respectively.
