WildCat Men's Tennis Knocks Off Cross-town Rival Lynchburg Friday

LYNCHBURG, VA – In an exciting finish, the WildCats edged back into the match after losing two of the three in doubles to win four of the six singles matches and knock off Lynchburg College in fall men's tennis action from the campus of LC.

Randolph (1-0) dropped No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but Jason Corsbie (Kingston, Jamaica/American International) and Hart Gillespie (Hurt, VA/Altavista) took the last double's point at No. 3 with a thrilling 9-8 (4) win to make the match 2-1 in favor of the hosts.

In singles play, the Hornets earned solid victories in No. 1 and No. 2 singles to get to four wins, only needing one more to claim the victory. The WildCats preserved and Shaun Chopp (Williamsburg, VA/Hampton Roads Academy) began the comeback with a straight sets win at No. 3 singles.

First-year Dan Phung (Hanoi, Vietnam) captured his No. 4 singles battle with a score of 6-3, 6-1 and fellow newcomer Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) earned his point with a win at No. 5 singles with scores of 6-4, 6-1.

With the match tied at four, the WildCats's Hart Gillespie and Lynchburg's Christian Golden each looked to earn the victory for their respective teams. After Golden took the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (5), Gillespie would settle down and earn a resounding set win at 6-1. In the super tiebreak, in almost darkness, Gillespie earned the win for his team with a 10-8 mark in the tiebreak.

The WildCats will christen their brand-new tennis courts that were recently finished October 6 for their final fall match as Southern Virginia University comes to Lynchburg, VA for non-conference play.
