WildCat Men's Soccer Rolls Past Shenandoah University 7-0

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – The potent Randolph College men's soccer attack struck at will Saturday, posting a program-record seven goals in a 7-0 non-conference shutout of Shenandoah University from WildCat Stadium.

The game was very even over the first 15 minutes, but Randolph started to take control just over 20 minutes in the game. The WildCats (2-0-0) opened the scoring at the 22:27 mark of the first half, as Nick Cornell (Front Royal, VA/Warren Co.) made a run through the middle of the defense and Timmy Songer (Windsor, VA/Windsor) slotted the pass through the backline to Cornell, who beat the keeper for a 1-0 lead.

The WildCats would keep the pressure on, eventually netting their second tally at the 41:42 mark on a header goal from Tristan Luxner (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) with help from Jacob Lusczek (Fredericksburg, VA/Chancellor) . Randolph would post its next goal with only four seconds left in the first half, thanks to a great effort from first-year Coulton Watson (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) .

Watson won a ball in the defensive third and carried the ball all the way through the midfield before dishing it off to junior Tyler Gilchrist (Bedford, VA/Liberty) . Watson continued his run and was rewarded as Gilchrist gave him a return pass for a wide open goal. The strike was Watson's first as a WildCat, as Randolph entered the intermission up 3-0.

After the break, Randolph continued to fire on all cylinders scoring four more tallies.
Sophomore Corey Sindle (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) chalked up an unassisted goal at 48:42 after a deflection landed right on his left foot, which he buried in the top right corner. Cornell was back at it nine minutes later, as sophomore John Adams (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) created space and fed a ball into the goal mouth which Cornell deposited for the 5-0 lead.

Sindle posted his third multi-goal game of his career at 60:15, as he found a loose ball and after seeing the goalie off his line turned and lofted a shot over the keeper for the goal. The WildCats finished their scoring in the 68th minute, as Lusczek set up Jacob Hood (New Market, MD/Linganore) for his second goal of the young season.

The Randolph defense was effective as well, holding Shenandoah (0-2-0) to only seven shots over the full ninety minutes. Sophomore Carter Smith (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) and first-year CJ Stevens (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) combined on the shutout, as Smith made three saves. Shenandoah starting keeper James Dutcher made six saves on the afternoon.

The WildCats outshot their visitors 23-7 and were awarded six corner kicks to just one of the Hornets. The seven goals in the contest for Randolph was two more than the previous record, as the WildCats netted five goals in wins over Averett University in 2008 and last year in 2010 over Ferrum College. It was the second most shots in a game for Randolph, as well as topping the most points accumulated in a contest with 19 (7 g, 5 a).

Randolph is back at it tomorrow as it hosts the Knights of Berkeley College (NJ) at 1 p.m. in non-conference play from WildCat Stadium.
