Southern Virginia Knocks Off Randolph Men's Tennis 7-2 Thursday

LYNCHBURG, VA –Southern Virginia University swept the doubles play and captured four of the six singles matches to cruise to the 7-2 win over the Randolph College men's tennis in the final fall match for the WildCats.

The WildCats (1-1) battled hard in No. 3 doubles, but Mitch Franko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) could not come up with the last point in pairs action, falling 8-4.

In the singles play, the Knights would win the first four matches to take a 7-0 lead and end any chance of a WildCat comeback. There were positives though for Randolph, as sophomore Jason Corsbie (Kingston, Jamaica/American International) earned a victory at No. 1 singles 7-6 (5), 6-3. The win for Corsbie was his first-ever win at the top spot of the draw.

Dales evened his record to 2-2 in singles play this fall with a victory at No. 6 singles, winning in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-4. For Dales, it was his second consecutive win, after he notched a victory at No. 5 singles against Lynchburg College last week.

In exhibition play, the WildCats won three of the four matches played. First-year Hart Gillespie (Hurt, VA/Altavista) won his pro-set match 8-0, while Tom Ha (Hanoi, Vietnam/Nguyen Tat Thanh) blanked his SVU counterpart 8-0. Newcomer Kody Provencher (King George, VA/King George) earned a win with an 8-5 victory.

Randolph will now look ahead to the spring season and the first match of the season February 22 at 3:30 p.m. against crosstown rival Lynchburg College.
