Washington & Lee Knocks Off Randolph Volleyball in Straight Sets

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Washington & Lee University hit over 40 percent in the first two games as it extended its winning streak over Randolph College to 20 games with a three-set victory over the WildCat volleyball team in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action from the Randolph Athletic and Dance (RAD) Center.

The contest was a Dig Pink contest, which helped raise awareness and funds for the American Breast Cancer Foundation. Both teams wore pink t-shirts in the pregame warm-ups, and during intermission two cancer survivors were honored at midcourt. Dig Pink is an event started by the Side Out Foundation.

In the contest, the Generals (24-2/9-0 ODAC) controlled play in the first pair of games, thanks to the hitting from M.A. Boles and Megan Daily. WLU took the first games with scores of 14 and 13, but Randolph rallied in the final game to make things interesting.

Down by seven at 21-14, Randolph College rattled over seven of the next nine points to pull to within three at 23-21 after a kill from junior Megan Wheatley (Sperryville, VA/Rappahannock Co.) . First-year Shana Nelson (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) followed that with a kill to cut the W&L edge to two, but back-to-back General points ended the match 25-23.

Nelson led the WildCats with an outstanding day attacking, finishing with 10 kills on only 13 attempts, a hitting percentage of .692. Junior Sam Sublett (Bedford, VA/Staunton River) and Jordan Templin (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co.) each had four kills, while Kerry McMichael (Westminster, SC/West Oak) had 15 helpers. First-year middle Tori Lange (Riverside, CA/Patriot) provided a spark for the 'Cats, as she had three blocks, including two solo rejections.

Boles posted game-highs of 12 kills and nine digs, while Daily finished the match with 11 kills and a solo block. Assists machine Meghan Meleski upped her conference-leading assists total to 759 with 33 more Friday night. The Generals hit .307 on the evening, as they moved their mark to 20-0 over Randolph all-time.

The WildCats will return to action on Wednesday with a road trip to Emory, VA at 6:30 p.m. to take on the Wasps of Emory & Henry College in more ODAC play.
